Ingredients
- 1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter
- 3/4 cup granulated sugar
- 3/4 cup brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
- 1 cup flour (either 100% all-purpose flour or 50/50 all-purpose/whole wheat)
- 1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
Directions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
- Line baking pan with parchment paper.
- Melt the butter.
- Whisk butter with both sugars. Add the flour, salt and baking powder. Mix well.
- Fold in half the chocolate chips.
- Pour mixture into baking pan. Tamp down with a spoon.
- Sprinkle the rest of the chocolate chips on top of the flattened mixture.
- Cook for 35-40 minutes. It will still look bubbly when you pull out the pan, but the brownies will harden as they cool.
- Leave in the pan, but out of the oven, for 15 minutes.
- Remove the brownies from the pan using the parchment paper and let cool an additional 15 minutes.
- Slice brownies and serve.
