Chocolate brownies

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup flour (either 100% all-purpose flour or 50/50 all-purpose/whole wheat)
  • 1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  2. Line baking pan with parchment paper.
  3. Melt the butter.
  4. Whisk butter with both sugars. Add the flour, salt and baking powder. Mix well.
  5. Fold in half the chocolate chips.
  6. Pour mixture into baking pan. Tamp down with a spoon.
  7. Sprinkle the rest of the chocolate chips on top of the flattened mixture.
  8. Cook for 35-40 minutes. It will still look bubbly when you pull out the pan, but the brownies will harden as they cool.
  9. Leave in the pan, but out of the oven, for 15 minutes.
  10. Remove the brownies from the pan using the parchment paper and let cool an additional 15 minutes.
  11. Slice brownies and serve.
